Jill Scott is the only child of mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia in Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. The family was dominated by her grandmother, and she was an only child. Scott attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls and after she graduated she was accepted into Temple University. Scott completed her secondary school education while also working at two different positions. Her goal was to be a teacher of English at a secondary school. The dream of becoming an English teacher at high school was cut short after she quit school. She began her career as a spoken-word artist who performed her own works at live poetry readings and later joined forces with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. They ended up collaborating and co-writing You Got Me. The singer performed at an Roots performance. She then secured collaborations, including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. While on the Canada tour for the Broadway musical Rent She gained invaluable performance experience. She was the first artist signed to Hidden Beach Recordings.
